Hair washing following a hair transplant

Avoid placing your head directly beneath the showerhead. Many shower heads are highly powerful, especially massage showerheads. Again, gentleness is the keyword. For the task, a rain or rainfall shower head that distributes water over a large area is suitable.

Patients who have undergone hair transplants frequently have questions about the procedure. They also have numerous queries about what happens after a hair transplant treatment. One of the most frequently asked topics is how to wash your hair following hair transplant surgery. This is very crucial. Your hair restoration technician's ability does not solely determine the outcome of your hair transplant. It also depends on how well you take care of yourself in the days that follow.

After the hair transplant procedure, wait 48 hours before shampooing your hair. You can, of course, take a shower before that, but leave your hair dry. You can start shampooing your hair three days following the transplant. For the first five days, wash your hair with the utmost caution. A moderate hair wash will not hurt the newly implanted follicles; nonetheless, continue with caution. Scrubbing too forcefully may dislodge a graft, which is undesirable.

When washing your hair after a hair transplant, what should you watch out for?

Avoid placing your head directly beneath the showerhead. Many shower heads are highly powerful, especially massage showerheads. Again, gentleness is the keyword. For the task, a rain or rainfall shower head that distributes water over a large area is suitable.

Filling a cup with water and pouring it over your head is the most gentle method. Washing should also be done carefully. Squeeze a small quantity of shampoo into your hand, massage it between your palms, and then gently rub it through your hair.

Our Alborj Hair Clinic team prefers this method: Pour a small amount of shampoo into the bottom of a cup, fill it with water, and gently massage the bubbling solution onto your head. Depending on how much hair you have, repeat this step several times.

Itching is usual for many days after a hair transplant. Small red dots will cover the donor site from which your follicles were harvested. Following surgery, these dots will start to scab over. If itching bothers you, try applying conditioner to the donor area. This helps to reduce itching. If scabs persist after 7 days, apply conditioner to the affected area. Massage lightly in a circular motion to let the scabs fall off.

During the first week after surgery, avoid contacting the recipient areas as much as possible. We instruct patients to sleep on their backs with their heads elevated on a few pillows. By lifting your head while sleeping, the pillows reduce the edema that can arise after a hair transplant.

Although some numbness and minor discomfort in the scalp can last for several days following surgery, most patients feel better within a day or two. For around 7–10 days, punctate red scabs will form at the bottoms of transplanted hair shafts at the recipient and donor locations. Typically, the patient returns to his or her normal appearance within 10–15 days following the operation. After this duration, only minimal redness may remain evident. Patients with extremely pale skin may endure persistent redness following treatment, whereas those with darker hair and complexion tend to recover more quickly. Overall, the recovery period after a hair transplant is highly individual, determined by the patient's age, lifestyle, food, and even climate.
