When one chapter closes, another often opens. In my case, the door that recently opened was not only surprising but truly exquisite. It’s been just over a year since I left the bustling streets of London, returning to my northern roots in Cheshire. Transitioning from city life to the tranquil countryside wasn’t easy, but it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. One of the unexpected perks? Easy access to the stunning beauty of the English countryside and nearby national parks, all just a couple of hours down the M6.
For the past few years, I’ve been deeply focused on my work in social media and influencer marketing. While my career kept me busy, my beloved lifestyle blog, Lucie Loves, took a backseat, save for a few press trips and exciting opportunities. So, when an invitation to review a stay at Netherby Hall came my way, the timing couldn't have been more perfect. It marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.
A Warm Welcome at Netherby Hall
Accepting the offer from Netherby Hall’s owners, Gerald and Margo, I had no idea how warmly we would be received. Located in Longtown, North Cumbria, just a short drive from Carlisle, this magnificent Grade II* listed country mansion feels worlds away from the busy life I left behind. Yet, in no time, I felt completely at home.
What makes a stay truly unforgettable? In my opinion, it's when you feel genuinely cared for, indulged, and relaxed. It’s not about wealth or luxury in the traditional sense—though Netherby Hall certainly has that—but about the exemplary hospitality that makes you feel like royalty.
The Journey to Netherby Hall
With a route planned via Google Maps, I found myself setting off for an easy 2-hour drive up the M6. As I passed through the gates of Netherby Hall, the sight of the stately home, nestled within 36 acres of gardens and grounds, immediately impressed. This estate, rich in history from Roman times to the present day, is located near the English-Scottish border, just north of the Lake District National Park.
As soon as we arrived, I knew we were in for a luxury staycation like no other.
Experiencing Netherby Hall’s Summer Adventures
I was invited to try one of Netherby Hall's exclusive Summer Experiences, which allow guests to design their own unique staycation. These experiences include activities such as a carriage ride and dinner at the Michelin-starred Pentonbridge Inn, private tours of the restored mansion with owner Gerald, and carriage rides through the picturesque gardens. There's even a guided tour of the Walled Garden, which supplies fresh produce to the nearby inn, and a visit to the stables to meet the horses that pull the carriages.
These experiences are available on selected dates during the summer months, making Netherby Hall an ideal summer retreat. However, if you miss the summer dates, mini-breaks without the additional experiences can be booked year-round.
A Romantic Getaway—With a Twist
Netherby Hall is perfect for a romantic mini-break or a special occasion celebration. However, I didn’t have anyone special to share this enchanting experience with. Instead, I invited one of my closest friends, Heather, to join me. After a quick train ride from Birmingham to Warrington, we hit the road together for the rest of the journey.
Though the experience would have been perfect for a couple, Heather and I thoroughly enjoyed the lavish eight-course dinner and private carriage ride, allowing us to soak in the grandeur of the estate together. It was a reminder that special moments don’t always need to be shared with a romantic partner—friendship can make the experience just as memorable.
The History and Restoration of Netherby Hall
Netherby Hall has a rich history that spans over 2,000 years. From Roman times to its more recent acquisition by Gerald and Margo in 2014, the estate has undergone extensive restoration to bring it back to its former glory. Their restoration efforts include creating nine luxury self-catering apartments and cottages within the courtyard, reviving the Walled Garden, and restoring the original stable block.
This historic estate has ties to the Grahams of Netherby, a scandalous 19th-century jewel robbery, and much more, making it a fascinating place to explore for history buffs and curious travelers alike.
Final Thoughts
My stay at Netherby Hall was nothing short of magical. The combination of breathtaking scenery, luxurious experiences, and the warm hospitality of the staff made it an unforgettable getaway. Whether you're looking for a romantic escape, a milestone celebration, or simply a luxurious break from the everyday, Netherby Hall offers a perfect blend of history, elegance, and relaxation.
For anyone considering a summer experience at Netherby Hall, I can’t recommend it enough. Even if the dates don’t align, the chance to stay in this beautifully restored mansion is an opportunity not to be missed.
